Congratulations, you’ve successfully followed every trend and now you look like everyone else

There’s a certain moment when you scroll through Instagram, spot someone’s outfit, and think: Wait, didn’t I just see this exact look three posts ago? Same jeans. Same blazer. Same “quiet luxury” belt. Or the new Flabelus shoes in purple.

Trends are fast, addictive, and sneaky. They promise individuality but end up giving us uniformity. If everyone is buying the same oversized blazer, is it really “personal style,” or is it just… the algorithm dressing us?

Here’s the truth: copying trends isn’t style. It doesn’t last longer than a TikTok sound. The second the beat changes, you’re left looking outdated — and broke.

So what’s the antidote?

  • Select. If half your wardrobe looks like your Instagram saved folder, pause. Ask: Would I actually wear this if nobody could see me?

  • Repeat. Repetition is where style lives. Icons aren’t remembered for what’s new, but for what’s theirs.

  • Uniform. Whether it’s black tailoring or jeans and ballet flats, a uniform frees you from the hamster wheel.

I saw a woman in Paris today, mid-40s, looking stunning. Nothing “special” by Instagram standards — no Samba Adidas in leopard print — but her outfit was individual, effortless, interesting. The kind of look that made me think: That’s inspiring. Because it was hers.

That’s the difference. Style isn’t about what gets 20,000 saves on TikTok. Style is what makes someone look twice at you on the street because you don’t look like everyone else.

Finding better inspiration

Instagram can be a spark, but if it’s your only source, you’re just playing dress-up in someone else’s closet. Try this instead:

  • Books. Buy a design book, explore patterns and colors. Dress yourself the way you’d decorate your house: comfortable, layered, lasting.

  • People watching. Sit at a café, notice who makes you look up. Be the person who makes someone else do the same.

Because the last thing fashion should make you feel is invisible.
Fashion is not style. Style is something you build — by knowing yourself, leaving space to experiment, finding what suits you, and then turning the volume all the way up.

Shine as fuck.
